In honor of Mother’s Day 2016 and our Guest Blogger’s 10th year as a city manager (and with deepest apologies to David Letterman), here are the Top Ten Reasons why moms rock as city and county managers, police and fire chiefs, department heads and other senior level positions in local government:
10.We know how to encourage others to use their “inside voice.”
9. We can give orders, praise and ultimatums all in the same breath.
8. We know the words “I hate you” are only temporary.
7. We teach the importance of sharing and letting others go first.
6. Half of our job is getting compliance from those who say “No!”
5. We have learned the deeper meanings of boundaries, patience and unconditional love.
4. We don’t care who started it, and we know how to referee, negotiate and cajole it to end.
3. We are used to being up half the night, most of the time cleaning up stinky messes.
2. We are used to patching up boo-boos.
And the number 1 reason Moms rock as local government leaders:
We make it “all better.”
