A Little Advice Goes a Long Way!

By Kristen Krey, Grants Administrator, City of Glendale, AZ

“Mentorship is a personal development relationship in which a more experienced or more knowledgeable person helps to guide a less experienced or less knowledgeable person. The mentor may be older or younger, but have a certain area of expertise. It is a learning and development partnership between someone with vast experience and someone who wants to learn”. – Farren Ph.D., Caela. “Eight Types of Mentor: Which Ones Do You Need?

My personal experience with mentorship throughout my career has been a life-long learning process.  As an experienced manager, with over 25 years in local government, I thought I knew everything (insert a hint of sarcasm).  Recently I had lunch with another local manager, and he gave me some advice that no one ever had before. He took the time to review my resume prior to our lunch and pointed out that I didn’t quantify some of my successes in my resume, and that employers are looking for results. No matter whether you are just starting your career, or in the middle of it, or looking to change it, there are always new insights and valuable advice you can gain from a mentor! It works both ways, I then shared this advice with a colleague who changed up her resume and a week later had 2 interviews lined up.

Never underestimate the power of mentoring, coaching, sharing, and asking for advice.
